Here’s a little video of me and the one and only Aslan King (what a name!) playing together in our own converted studio when we lived together in a little community in Norfolk. I’m playing a piece called ‘Milonga’ by Jorge Cardoso - an Argentinian composer of 20th century South American classical guitar. I love these South American pieces that combine the classical style with the colour, vibrancy and rhythms of South America. The melodies are strong and beautiful whilst also harmonically interesting and bursting with character.
I was sitting playing one Summer’s day when Azzy came in and jumped on the kit, we played for about 30 seconds before I was loving it too much that I needed to stop and set my phone up to film, so this is our first proper take together. It’s so satisfying to hear this piece I’ve played thousands of times given a fresh breath of life through the raw magnetism of percussion. Azzy’s the best drummer I know and is so quick to pick up on rhythms and groove along, it’s always a pleasure to play with him and I hope it’ll get to happen again soon.
I’d actually love to record an album of this, a collection of South American guitar classics brought to life with the drum kit. Simple and satisfying.
Here’s another incredibly unrelated video of me and Azzy that I’ll never have another reason to post anywhere so I’ll put it here, but be warned, it’s spooky…
