I have a new EP that is actually out already and it's called… The Slug and the Orange Under the Moon. I've been making it over the house sit period from December and it's been a rollercoaster. It was the first thing I recorded in a boomy room with the dog barking. I'm still developing my skills when it comes to mixing and this really felt like polishing a poo at certain moments. I've always found the creative process to be a rollercoaster with moments where I love what i'm making then other moments where I think it's a total piece of shit and this was no exception. Things have balanced out now and i'm feeling all good about putting it out. I have really low spec and old equipment (for example a 2012 macbook!), bad rooms to record in, and i'm still learning a lot about composition, arrangement, performing, recording, mixing, mastering, so it's a good process for me to let go of everything needing to be perfect and just enjoy making music and the never-ending learning process. I've started thinking of my Spotify as a similar place to this Substack, a sketchbook to document my recordings as I develop. Just on Spotify they'll be what is the closest I can get them to 'finished'.
So this EP came about as I was struggling with the infinite emptiness of starting a new project. For the last few years i've been composing for ACER and following a narrative which i've really loved (I'll write more about this later), and I decided having a story for my own piece would be a good starting point. Lauren suggested I write a piece based on this world we discovered which is how much slugs love to eat oranges. We went out one day with an old orange and fed it to slugs and they loved it, so since then we go out our way to feed slugs oranges, it's pretty funny and weird to watch and I recommend giving it a go. Here's a little video from back then:
And that is how the idea for this EP came to fruition!
The EP is a 3 track kinda guy, the first track is Moon which sets the scene, a beautiful serene full moon night full of magic and mystery. Then Track 2 is Slug, the entry of our slimy little friend, bringing some playfulness and mischief. Track 3 is Orange, it begins with the orange appearing in the distance as a rising sun of euphoric slug pleasure, followed by a frantic drive to reach the orange, culminating in an ecstatic frenzy of gorging, before winding down to a satisfied slug sliming their way into the distance. The Track at the top of the page is 'Slug'.
I hope you enjoy the EP!
P.S. If you made it this far then here’s a slimy slug freestyle bonus to slicken your sound suckers
